5The Best Phone Available
By Captain Awesome
That's a pretty bold statement, but bear with me.Android is an excellent operating system with a lot of features others can't offer. If you're interested in a platform that gets updated frequently then Android is for you.A lot of phones run Android. Everything from cheap pay as you go units to the highest end expensive units are available. The major negative about Android is that networks and handset makers can put customised interfaces on top of it, meaning updates to Android itself are delayed due to those customisations having to be updated for them to work on the new version of Android. This one weak point can be solved by buying one of Google's reference devices. That basically means Google have partnered with a handset maker(in this case Samsung) and put the latest version of Android on it with no software customisation. These phones get the fastest updates and are often referred to as 'pure Google'.Having the latest software is great, but what makes this phone so good? This phone is similar in hardware terms to the Samsung Galaxy S. It has the fastest mobile phone processor currently available, as well as the best graphics processor you'll find in a phone. Google have added to that great hardware by providing a gyroscope for extremely accurate motion detection and a near field communications chip. NFC allows you to use your phone to scan embedded tags. In the future, developers are likely to build applications that let you check-in for your flight, pay for your shopping with your phone and more. This phone also has a lot of internal storage and plenty of room for applications, too. This phone is fast. Really fast. Bought off-contract and using a pay as you go or month-to-month contract, you'll save a great deal of money over a 2-year contract from the major networks. If you're looking for something a little cheaper, but with the same pure Google experience, the Nexus One(review in my profile) is essentially the same, but with a smaller screen and slower hardware.

5Smartphone convert
By K. Poole
I have had Nokia phones for the last 20 years. They used to be great phones. After a fashion, they synced with my contacts, diary and (if I wanted ) email on my personal MS Outlook account. But as other manufacturers moved on with that aspect of things, Nokia stood still. The very ancient and creaky Nokia PC Suite sync software was supposedly superseded by the shiny new Nokia Ovi Suite - but that was so terrible I uninstalled it and went back to my old PC Suite with all its problems. So when my eyes started to struggle with the tiny screen on my trusty old E51 and my stupidly cheap "SIM only" contract was coming to an end, I decided to take Nokia's new CEO at his word and abandon them. I wanted a phone that would do phone calls well (yes, that's still important to me), that would have a nice easily readable big screen but wasn't TOO big a leap in size from my old Nokia E51 candy bar, that would sync REALLY WELL with my Outlook software, that would allow me to tether easily with my laptop (which I use a lot for work on the road, and I need internet access on it), that would syncronise documents and other files with my laptop (I like to use my phone as a backup for all my important work documents) and would syncronise my "password vault" with my laptop. Anything else it did would be a bit of a bonus - but I only buy a new phone every three or four years, so I tend to buy something near the "front of the curve" when I do.I have always kept a big wadge of music on my phone, but rarely listened to it. Ditto using the radio which was built in. As for the camera, I am really not that bothered. It's quite nice to be able to snap a photo or a video clip, but I tend to use a camera for anything I want to look at properly afterwards.I narrowed the choice down to the iPhone 4 (one of my sons has a 3GS and loves it), the HTC Desire HD (which my other son, the IT lover, has and swears by), the Samsung Galaxy S and the Google Nexus S (which is of course made by Samsung, and is described by some as a souped up Galaxy S with plain vanilla Android on it).The iPhone was a problem with tethering. Unless you "jailbreak" it - and you have to be confident with your IT to do that, which I'm not - you have to pay an extra £5 a month just for the privilege of using the data you are already paying for on a different device. That really pees me off. Also, there's something about the "thought control" aspect of iPhones that I felt uncomfortable with. And they bring out a new one every year which makes the old one somehow so much less desirable. The Galaxy S is about to be replaced by the S2, and it was a bit tempting to wait for that - but then I'd be paying top whack for the very front of the technology curve, which I don't like doing. But it was enough to put me off the Galaxy S (nobody likes buying last year's phone, however good it undoubtedly is, if it's about to be made obsolete by a new model).I very nearly bought the HTC, but in the end it was just the sheer size and weight of it that put me off. It's HUGE! and HEAVY!So I plumped for the Nexus S, and so far (three weeks in) I am very pleased with my choice. I have no idea whether Android 2.3 is thousands of times faster than 2.2, etc etc. All I know is it works fine for me, it's very quick and after initial bedding in, I am pleasantly surprised by the battery life. I keep the bluetooth, wifi and 3G switched off unless I actually want to use them, and if I want to use it like an old fashioned phone, it will last at least two or three days on one charge. I LOVE the wifi tethering - the phone sets itself up as a wifi hotspot (fully secured with WPA) and then allows me to access the internet via the phone's 3G connection using my laptop's wifi function. MUCH better than the old bluetooth or USB tethering I was (sometimes) able to manage with my old Nokia and PC Suite. I have now got used to the jump up in size - the benefits of the bigger screen, better wifi, etc easily outweigh the drawback of the extra bulk. It's also quite light - when I first saw one in the shop, I thought "that looks a bit lightweight and plasticky" and it's true that the case IS plastic. But it's actually very high quality plastic and the weight saving compared to the HTC Desire HD is very noticeable. I actually prefer the look of the Nexus S now.On the software front, I have been very impressed by what I have found on the Android marketplace. I know some people are very sniffy about it, compared to the Apple App Store, but remember I am coming from Nokia's Ovi Store. It was very easy to pick up a new Android version of the old S60 password vault I had used, and it works brilliantly (much better than the old version). And for a few pence I have a great program that allows me to sync folders of documents etc between my laptop and my phone - and even read and correct them on my phone (Word, Excel, etc etc) - fabulous. But the real quantum leap has come through using a google account to sync my Outlook calendar and contacts between my phone and my laptop - I am a bit nervous about this "cloud" thing, and I don't like the idea of someone out there having control of all my data, but I take the view that keeping my contacts and diary on my google account purely to provide a sync function is OK. I can't quite bring myself to use the gmail for the same purpose, though. But it has been very easy to set up my phone to access my normal internet provider's email gateway. What were the things I worried about? The lack of a separate SD/mini SD data card - I had one in my Nokia, but being truthful, I never took it out. The worry is that if my phone just "dies", then all my data dies with it - but because of the backup/syncing I do between my phone and my laptop, I decided I could live with this risk. The bad reports of battery life - my Nokia would last about 4 or 5 days in my pocket, and some reports suggested the Nexus S would need a top-up charge at lunch time every day. Not so. It easily lasts two or three days if necessary, and by buying a car charger (for £3) I can top it up on the road if I need to. The lack of a built-in radio? I was able to count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I had actually used that function on my Nokia, so that didn't worry me. Ditto the "non-iPod" type music files experience. The less than brilliant photo/video capabilities? Not really a big issue for me - see above. If that's your thing, then get the Galaxy S2!!

5Going gaga for Google
By Aaron C. Braund
POSITIVE: Android Gingerbread - endless customization- fast, next to no lag- vibrant, colourful displayNEGATIVES:No SD card slot- Android market still needs a LOT of work- applying screen protectors to the contour screen is hellHad a HTC Desire HD before; loved Android, hated the phone, was just too massive. Bought an iPhone 4; was blissful in a Aldous Huxley, Brave New World kind of way. No challenges, everything was clean and simple. After awhile It kind of felt like I was in a prison, and Apple were always watching me, making sure every feature of the phone was locked down.Needless to say I sold the iPhone, and bought this. Best decision in my gadget life. Android 2.3 to me is a mile improvement on 2.2. The phone just feels right: people moan about the plastic but did someone forget to mention it's good quality plastic? I prefer the feel of this to the monstrous Desire HD.Performance? Running apps? Multitasking? It's a fast beast, gobbling applications like they were nothing.Customization? You got it in spades: themes, widgets, everything is adaptable to your own personal preference.I thought the resolution would be disappointing after witnessing the retina scorching iPhone 4 display. Not so. The super amoled screen is so bright and colourful- that iPhone 4 resolution was quickly forgotten. Also the curved screen is charming, but you might strangle it applying a screen protector. The omission of SD storage is strange and inconvenient and one of the major downers on this Google party. Alas there is 16GB on board but thats not removable. Speaking of Google, if you're a fan or use Google services like Gmail or Reader you can sync all your Google accounts with the phone. The Google Apps are excellent: check out the new 3D maps or set up your Gmail to get push email straight to your phone. As for the Android App Market... *SIGH* it's really underwhelming, but it continually improves. Nevertheless, Apple rules the app wars. Google need to tighten this up ASAP but I envisage them making ground with Apple.Damn good phone, simple as. If you want a brainless experience and are happy to do everything Apple tells you to do get an iPhone 4. If you want freedom to do whatever the hell you like within the software, get Android. If you want the best phone on the market, get the Nexus S.Suppose I should have mentioned somewhere that it's good at making phone calls too.
