The best value and most rugged Xperia of 2012

This understated little phone is a real gem, and an ideal take anywhere phone for those who are accident prone or style conscious.It has all the usual Sony smartphone features: decent (modest) 5mp camera with flash, wi fi, GPS, walkman music player (which, oddly for Sony, seems to play FLAC!), movies, email, texting, Bravia engine to enhance images and video, the world of Android apps etc etc. It's smaller than most current phones, with a 3.5 inch touchscreen (the same size as the iPod 4th gen) which like the 4S is just perfect for slipping in a trouser or shirt pocket. It is easily updateable to ICS as soon as you plug it into your computer, and another update to Jellybean is due early next year. The touchscreen is scratch resistant, and is slick and responsive, even with the supplied screen protector fitted (hint: you can remove the inevitable dust particles by dabbing them with sticky tape for an "invisible" bubble-free appearance).The really great feature of the GO however is that it is far more rugged than its size and appearance let on. It has a high waterproof rating, and rubberized plugs sealing up its various sockets (micro usb, headphones, and micro sd card slot). In fact, all of the innards of the phone are well sealed over. According to Sony's marketing and several YouTube clips, this little beauty will survive being immersed in water for several minutes....not that I'd recommend trying it. The SAR rating of just under 90 isn't too bad either, for those of us who worry about such things especially for our children...I ordered one of these for my daughter, who recently drenched her mp3 player in coke when a bottle leaked in her bag. Needless to say, the player died. At least the Go should survive a similar accident, should lightning strike twice. I am so smitten with this was phone that I'm also buying one for myself. It is a tad on the small side for me, but add a gel case and it is just right. Even came with a screen protector in the box. I am the happiest I have ever been from buying a phone as it is a take anywhere device that should take the knocks and splashes, it does all I want and more, I can carry around all my favourite music and photos on a 32GB micro SD card, and if it breaks I can simply swap the card into another phone and it won't bankrupt me. While updating the phone to Android ICS (a Jelly Bean update is scheduled for early next year) I bought another for myself. Sure, if you spend more you can get the Xperia T, or maybe look at HTC, or spend much more and get an iPhone 5, but splash water on almost every other phone regardless of price and you'll be reaching for your insurance policies.Sony just don't seem to be doing enough to market this phone in the UK, which is kind of strange given the wet weather we get here. The Go has been eclipsed by its bigger but less robust brothers, including the "Bond phone" Xperia T and even the Tipo.Personally, I think the Go is the best of the current crop of Xperias. The only negative features to me are the slightly flimsy rear cover (which simply encases the otherwise sealed battery, sim card and micro SD slots, without itself being watertight), the relatively low screen resolution (320x480, though even without the Bravia switched on images look brilliantly sharp to me), the non-removable battery (which is after all sealed water tight), and the small screen being tricky to type on with my chunky fingers. Oddly, Sony's version of Ice Cream Sandwich seems to leave out the encryption features on this and other of their phones and hopefully they will fix this with the next upgrade as I am one of those people who like to carry my whole life on the phone, and I do worry a little about losing it.The bottom line is that for the price, you cannot go wrong with this phone. The only thing that will persuade me to part with mine is if I ever get my hands on the bigger, dearer, and as yet unreleased 4G Xperia V. But even then, I do not need 4G right now and if the V does not come in the Yellow reminiscent of the old "sports" Walkman range, I will probably stick with the Go.

I will confess I don't know much about phones but since all the product details are on the amazon page, I won't both repeating them. This is my first smartphone and from a users perspective, this phone is brilliant. Lightweight and slim and (I think) stylish in yellow. I upgraded to ICS as the Sony software which comes with the phone suggested I do and, as far as I can tell, it hasn't made a great deal of difference. The phone does sometimes get stuck on or between screens/apps but I find that turning it on and off again every night can keep this problem at bay. The screen is big and the phone copes well with all the apps I use (and being a first time smartphoner, I use a lot!). I find that sometimes the phone is not quite loud enough when in phone calls or listening to music.The only real problem I have with the phone is that the charging cable which came with it is incredibly short! It is only a micro USB type so I can buy a longer one for a couple of pounds (or use the cable for my kindle, which is much longer!) but it is just something else to consider.
