Motorola provides appalling support

Sadly, I just can't recommend this phone. While the hardware is generally good (despite poor camera and famously loose headphone jack), the support from Motorola themselves leaves Android novices and experts totally stranded.Given the company's open disregard for keeping the version of Android updated on their phones, you are virtually guaranteed that any Milestone you buy will be out of date (and not just a little).This is not limited to the Milestone, but to all Motorola phones at the moment.It is a crying shame, but HTC, Samsung and LG are all far out-gunning this formerly mighty company. All of my family and friends have bought these brands over Motorola, based on my recommendation and they have been delighted with the speed of updates and support from the companies.If I can editorialise for a moment - I fear Motorola's former financial issues have meant that they are cutting corners on their software support. This ruins the customer's experience with the phone. Considering the length of most contracts for phones, a Milestone would be an unwise buy as it is already looking at the end of its support life from Motorola.Be warned.

Great Phone (long as you don't get it wet!)

I've now had this phone for almost 9 months. When I bought the handset it was in my opinion the best android handset available at the time. In the last 9 months many newer android devices have been released, plenty with higher specs than the milestone. However I'm still very happy with my purchase for the following reasons:1) The Qwerty Keyboard - Not many android devices contains an actual hardware keyboard, and I just can't get used to the on-screen-keyboard. (You have the option of typing into the hardware keyboard or using an on-screen-keyboard with this phone. Most other android devices only have the on-screen-keyboard.)2) The directional pad on the right of the keyboard. This is amazingly useful if you misspell a word in a text and need to move the cursor back to correct it.3) It's a generally very nice looking and well designed piece of hardware.In addition to this it runs the android OS which I love. So many apps to download. Motorola have released an Android 2.1 update for it which includes Google navigation so the phone doubles as a sat-nav, a feature which I use a lot. Other great apps I have are Shop Savvy which uses the phones camera to read a bar code and then tells you where you can buy the product cheap online, and Retro radio which plays internet radio stations.So why didn't I give it 5? My only complaint is the phone isn't particularly water resistant. I got caught in a heavy shower of rain for about an hour and ended up soaked through. The phone never turned on again after this. Luckily it was insured so I got a new one pretty quickly, but I expected it to be a little more resistant to water.

I have had this phone since launch in December 2009, but have now had to give it up in frustration. Buyer beware.Although the hardware itself is nice (unless you are unlucky enough to get one with a malfunctioning battery/camera/touch-screen) the key to the phone working is it being bug-free, and that is something Motorola don't take care of in a timely manner.Don't be fooled into thinking that because it runs Android it will always be kept up-to-date and bug free by Google, because Motorola have created this phone locked out from any updates apart from the ones they want to provide. This means you are at their mercy, and after a year of waiting for updates from them I have given up and bought the Nexus S instead.If you are interested in a phone that just works, and you don't want to apply updates to, then this may be the phone for you (unless you get one of the buggy ones) BUT if you expect your phone accept the latest updates when available then please buy something else.
